Weekend jobs are definitely helpful to make extra cash. Whether you are a student, a stay at home mom, or a full time employee with a regular 9-5 job, a nice weekend job is really helpful.
In order to find weekend jobs that will pay you well, you can use this simple yet powerful 4 step process:
- Identify your skill set. This is the key to quickly find your high payment job.
- Prepare an eye catching resume.
- Look for your job via the proper channels.
- Win the interview. There are many pitfalls in the interview, you really need to get prepared to beat the competition and win!
#1 Identifying Your Skill Set is the Key for both Your Weekend Jobs AND Full Time Jobs!
Maybe you are thinking: I’m just looking for a weekend job, I can do anything as long as I get paid.
Well, you may not care much about the job. But the employer who’s going to hire you cares a lot! Because you are going to be their resource that can make them money or give them headache. For the employer, hiring you is their investment associated with risks!
Therefore you need to tell your future boss who you are – in just one sentence, not a long story: an office admin, a customer service representative, a software developer or a driver.
“What if I don’t have any skill or work experience?”
- First of all, your skill and experience come from all sources – it could be your volunteer work, your school activities and your home activities (such as using spreadsheet and accounting software to manage your own income and tax). For example, if a dentist is looking for a receptionist, many people will be qualified for this job. However, if you know a little bit bookkeeping, you could be the winner.
- Secondly, your skill is not what you can do, but what’s useful for the employer. For example, you can use spread sheet. You need to tell your future boss that you have used spread sheet to manage your family financial statement or present your business ideas in a school project. This way the boss can match your skill to what he or she needs – the business value!
As you can see, identifying your skill set is critical for you to find your dream job – whether weekend jobs or the regular 9-5 jobs.

#2 Preparing an Eye Catching Resume – You Have Only 2 Seconds for People to Read Your Resume!
Two seconds are what you may get your future boss’ attention to your resume!
“How come?!”
Well, this is how people surf on the Internet. Each job posting gets tens or even hundreds of resumes. Your future boss will take a quick look at your resume. If it doesn’t catch the eyes right away, your resume is trashed!
Therefore, focus on the first half of your resume and make sure it really catch people’s eyes – NOT with fancy fonts or color, but with the skill set your boss needs plus a few simple tricks:
- Tell your boss who you are: Office assistant with 3 year work experience for community charity, or Java software developers built a university research system
- Tell your boss both your experience and your skill set in your first sentence, like the examples above. Mention the place(s) you have worked for, and/or the type of industries
- Use nouns and numbers, don’t use adjectives – i.e. to tell people the fact.
- Use bullet points – people likes bullet points and numbers
“Should I list my education and hobby?”
- List your education at the bottom of your resume
- Don’t mention your hobby
The secret is that work experience is the #1 concern for the employer because it means less training and less errors. Simply go through any job description and you can tell right away. If you put your education and hobby at the top of your resume, you are telling people, “sorry I got nothing else to show you.” – then you lose your chance for great weekend jobs right away!
The proper order of your resume:
- Your Name
- Your Contact Information: email and cell phone number are the must, putting your address is going to hurt you. Click Here to learn why…
- Your qualification
- Your work experience
- Your training and education
The secret of recruiters:
A recruiter or job agency is a service provider (usually a firm) that will get jobs from employers and find resources (that is YOU) for these jobs.
Using recruiters is the KEY (I can’t stress how important it is based on my near 20 years working with them!) for your career success for the following reasons:
- Only big companies can afford to hire recruiters. Therefore they have the dream jobs you want – LOTS of them!
- Recruiters have to give you the jobs in order to make a living and keep their reputation. Therefore the jobs will look for you – NOT you look for the jobs!
- Recruiters have both resource managers (the ones to look for people to fill in the positions) and account managers (the ones to work with their clients on a daily basis). They have great relationship with employers and can easily get your an interview! Employers trust them to do the pre-screen and send only the best resources for the interview!
Therefore working with recruiters is not only a great way to look for weekend jobs, but also find the best full time job you can every dream of!
However, in order to get recruiters to work with you, you need to:
- Prepare your resume to attract them – which is different from a resume for the employer
- Find them via the proper channel
